The Opportunity

Join QBE's Global Tax Team as a Lead Tax Accountant, where you'll play a critical role in driving tax compliance, planning, and reporting across North America & Bermuda. In this position, you will oversee tax accounting and reporting processes, ensure compliance with IFRS17, ASC 740 and SSAP 101, manage audits, and collaborate with finance, legal, and external advisors to optimize QBE's tax operations. Additionally, you will work with cross-border teams to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

This is a high-impact role for a detail-oriented, strategic thinker who thrives in a complex, global financial environment and is passionate about innovation, process improvement and compliance excellence. This role provides exposure to global tax teams in other divisions such as Europe and Australia.

Location: New York (55 Water Street, New York)

Work Arrangement: This role is hybrid, where you will be expected to be in the office 2-3 days per week

The salary range for this role is $120,500.00 - $180,500.00

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and/or Review quarterly and annual tax provisions for North America and Bermuda, ensuring compliance with local regulations.

  • Ensure accuracy of tax reconciliations, deferred tax calculations, and financial statement disclosures on a US Statutory and IFRS17 reporting basis.

  • Review and ensure accuracy in the preparation of Federal income tax returns and workpapers for P&C insurance and non-insurance companies.

  • Review relevant local income tax returns, work papers, and calculations of quarterly estimates and extensions, and remit payments and forms to taxing authorities.

  • Monitor and interpret tax legislation to ensure QBE remains compliant with evolving tax laws.

  • Manage external audits, acting as a key liaison with auditors and internal finance teams.

  • Champion process improvement by evaluating current processes, identifying weaknesses, and implementing new procedures.

  • Ensure the operating effectiveness of internal controls, reviewing tax accounting policies.

  • Support onshore and offshore team member development by assisting with integration of new Tax Accountants, sharing knowledge, and providing recommendations on best practices.

  • Partner with the business on tax planning opportunities and compliance matters.

  • Develop and mentor junior tax professionals, fostering a high-performance, dynamic, nimble, and agile team culture.

  • Help advise on tax matters relating to Tax Operations, ensuring high-quality advice and guidance is given, for example modelling deferred tax assets of the new CAMT regime

  • Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, tax authorities, and auditors to ensure service delivery meets expectations.

  • Monitor tax legislation, regulations, and rulings, interpreting and communicating to ensure compliance and obligations are met.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation, or equivalent work experience.

  • 5+ years of corporate tax experience, preferably in a complex financial services or an insurance company environment.

  • Strong knowledge of ASC 740 or IFRS17 and SSAP 101, with experience in tax provision and compliance.

  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret and apply tax law to business transactions.

Preferred Experience

  • CPA or MST (Master's in Taxation) preferred.

  • Big 4 public accounting or large corporate tax department experience.

  • Property & Casualty insurance tax experience highly desirable.

  • Transfer pricing & international tax experience is a plus.

  • Experience with Corptax, or Oracle EPM (Tax Reporting and Compliance Solution, Smartview, Fusion G/L) is beneficial.

Compensation Package: The salary range for this role is provided above. This is the national range for location(s) listed. The salary offer will be decided based on the role's complexity, its location, and the candidate's professional background, including their education and experience.
