JOB DESCRIPTION Head Teacher, 4th grade (9/10-year-olds) Leave replacement, half-yearStart Date: August 27, 2025 End Date: February 19, 2026Salary: 61K-150K (prorated to time of employment) Schedule: This role is a half-year position, and is in the Professional Employees' Federation (PEF), the union for faculty members at Bank Street College. The hours for this position are 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, Mondays through Fridays, and until 5:00 PM on Wednesdays for a weekly afternoon faculty meeting. This role also includes occasional evening work (3 for the time period). About the Position The Bank Street School for Children is seeking a passionate, knowledgeable, and team-oriented 4th Grade Head Teacher (HT). The HT works with a full-time Associate Teacher (AT) in the classroom. Typically, the AT is pursuing a masters degree in the Bank Street Graduate School of Education, and the HT supports their learning-by-doing in the classroom. In partnership with the Student Support & Learning Team, which includes the Learning Specialist, Literacy Specialist, Math Specialist, Mental Health Specialist, and Division Head, the classroom teachers engage in social emotional support, executive function support, and communication with family members. The classroom teachers also communicate and collaborate with the Specials Teachers (Art, Drama, Library, Music, P.E., Woodshop, and World Languages). The ideal candidate will be excited about working with 9- and 10-year-olds in a progressive school that values social justice and equity. RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include: Work with Children & Parents Teaching Social Studies, Science, Math, Reading, and Writing to 9- and 10-year-olds that is responsive to children's developmental capacities and needs Serving as the anchor teacher for each student, supporting their social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development Communicating and collaborating regularly with families and others who support learning and growth Documenting lesson plans and a comprehensive curriculum with guidance from supervisor and in collaboration with other members of the 9/10s team Collaborating with other 9/10s classroom teachers and specialists to support curriculum and children's development Facilitating the existing Identity and Racial Justice and Advocacy curriculum in collaboration with the other 9/10s teach team and with the guidance of the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Organizing and maintaining a positive classroom community that reflects curricular work Differentiating instruction to support group and individual learning Sharing progress and concerns with families through conferences, written reports, and regular parent communication Other Responsibilities Attending regular faculty, division, age-level, curriculum, and supervisory meetings Meeting weekly with the Associate Teacher to support their learning and engagement in planning as well as the daily classroom schedule Fulfilling weekly community duties as assigned which may include but are not limited to lunch, recess, early morning care, and bus Additional duties assigned as specified by supervisor QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have: Experience teaching 4th grade required At least 3-5 years teaching experience at the elementary level Master's degree required Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with regard to child development, progressive education, and constructivist teaching Ability to work collaboratively, with interest in an interdisciplinary approach to education Experience with Google Suite, and adept at use of technology to support teaching and learning Strong organizational skills, including time management Strong grasp of progressive classroom management techniques Experience writing narrative reports about student progress and goals Optimism, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a strong ability to connect with children Demonstrated classroom management skills ABOUT US Bank Street is a leader in education, a pioneer in improving the quality of classroom practice, and a national advocate for children and their families.
