Guardian Life Head of Mutual Fund Accounting and Fund Controller in New York, New York

This role will effectively manage a team in the daily oversight of operations and mutual fund accounting and reporting for Guardian Variable Products Trust (GVPT). The individual will oversee staff in the review of work prepared by third party vendors for the complex which include but are not limited to fund accounting and reporting related to SEC/shareholder/regulatory reporting matters.

Monitor staff’s responsibilities such as daily oversight of the Funds’ valuation; monthly checks of Funds’ fees and expenses; expense budgets for the Funds; monthly reconciliation of sub-adviser’s position holdings; monthly and semi-annual SEC reporting; annual Form N1-A updates; review and approval of Fund invoice payments. Hold monthly Fair Valuation Committee Meetings, prepare quarterly Board of Trustee meeting materials, participate in annual service providers due diligence visits, review information from sub-advisers and service providers, enhance, implement, and monitor Funds’ compliance policies and procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory bodies; work closely with Guardian’s partners in the business unit as well as internal and external auditors, and third-party service providers; manage and assess the ongoing training needs of the team.

This position will report directly to the Head of Asset Management Accounting & Mutual Fund Treasurer. The culture is highly collaborative, so a desire to be part of a team, demonstrate problem solving, assist in monitoring controls, identification and implementation of best practices is necessary. The individual must be able to work independently and function as co-owner of all controls and procedures of daily/periodically mutual fund accounting responsibilities. The necessary qualifications require a person with the highest moral character willing to accept responsibility and accountability to support the department to maintain a functional oversight proportionate to the needs of the Funds and PAIA.

The candidate must possess extensive knowledge of the Federal Securities Laws such as: Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, and the Investment Company Act of 1940.

You will

  • The Fund Controller will be responsible for the implementation of the Trust’s policies and procedures adopted under Rule 38a-1, and, in connection therewith making recommendations to the Treasurer regarding policies and procedures as may appear advisable from time to time in compliance with regulatory changes.

  • The Fund Controller shall assist the Treasurer in understanding any material impact, if any, that may have on the daily oversight of the Funds’ NAV calculation.

In addition, The Fund Controller will be responsible for ensuring that the Associate Controllers perform:

Daily:

  • Oversight of Funds’ NAV calculation by third-party service provider.

  • Maintain supporting documentation for material security price fluctuations.

  • Accurate price for securities to be fair valued, if applicable.

  • Accurate and timely payment of Fund invoices.

Monthly:

  • Review and request approval of payment for monthly management and 12b-1 expenses.

  • Reconciliation of Fund holdings between accounting agent and sub-adviser.

  • Liquidity and ASC820 classifications.

  • N-Port filing.

  • Prepare reports for the Fair Valuation Committee Meeting.

Periodical/Semi-annually:

  • Fund expense analysis.

  • Review of TSR and Shareholder reports prepared by third-party service provider.

  • Coordinate approval and SOX sub-certifications for the Schedule of Investments with the sub-advisers.

Annually:

  • Form N-CEN filing.

  • Form N1-A updates.

  • The Fund Controller will hold monthly Fair Valuation Committee Meetings (SEC Rule 2a5) and record minutes of the meetings.

  • The Fund Controller shall coordinate review and approval including SOX sub-certifications for the Schedule of Investments with the sub-advisers.

  • Gather and compile information for the DCAP meetings semi-annually and record minutes.

  • The Fund Controller shall collaborate with internal business partners, auditors, and financial reporting service providers related to legal, regulatory, and general industry regulatory issues and developments impacting the mutual fund and attempt to identify and address issues and potential problem areas before adoption of such regulations.

  • The Fund Controller will assist the Treasurer in insurance coverage coordination for GVPT.

  • The Fund Controller will foster healthy professional relationships with internal and external business partners.

  • The Fund Controller will participate with internal partners in the due diligence visits of the Trust’s designated service providers.

  • Leading key projects including but not limited to financial reporting developments, subadvisor changes, and fund substitutions.

  • Ad hoc reporting, as needed.

You have

  • 15+ years of experience in an Asset Management Accounting role, with at least 5 in a leadership role; Mutual Fund Manager experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with SEC 1940 Act regulation

  • Strong project management skills with ability to coordinate partners across multiple organizations.

  • Strong organizational skills: ability to work independently and manage deadlines.

  • Ability to run complex tasks and deploy collaborative and analytical approaches.

  • Ability to multi-task, managing various tasks and deliverables with simultaneous deadlines.

  • Proven ability to build effective relationships.

  • Flexibility and quick adaptation to changing priorities, methodologies, processes, and systems.

Location /Travel

Hybrid role - 3 days in the office, 2 days WFH at the Hudson Yards, NYC office.

Occasional 0-10% Travel

Guardian Variable Products Trust (GVPT) is a Trust that offers variable insurance product funds (each a “Fund” or collectively the “Funds”) in a sub-advised platform. Park Avenue Institutional Advisers LLC will serve as the investment adviser to each of the Funds with combined net assets of $4.3 billion. There are multiple investment strategies and twenty-four funds which will comprise of equity, fixed income, and international fund types. Additionally, a few of the funds are expected to receive additional assets through a substitution process from existing third party funds. The Funds will be offered exclusively through variable insurance products issued by Guardian’s wholly-owned stock subsidiary, The Guardian Insurance & Annuity Company, Inc. (GIAC). GIAC has issued variable insurance products since the early 1970s.

Salary Range:

$129,500.00 - $212,750.00

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
