GENERAL DUTIES
Level I
Under general supervision of the College Security Director or designee, incumbents will be assigned to perform various campus duties of a specialized nature in one or more of the areas listed below. All incumbents perform related duties, including post-audit reviews to ascertain program effectiveness.
Incumbents in this title, when assigned to specialization of campus physical security such as intrusion detection, photo identification, access control and the like, will provide oversight to the system design and specification activity as well as to the contract design, bidding and letting, and project management functions.
Incumbents in this title, when assigned to security staff training and development, will conduct and provide oversight to campus in-service training programs, will coordinate campus participation in University-sponsored training programs, and will ensure that all training related to licenses and certifications is current.
Serves as equipment specialist for CCTV, lighting, access control, fire alert, or other safety, alarm, or end of line surveillance systems; assisting in the formulation of college system designs; consulting with vendors; serving as liaison in the purchase, installation, maintenance, repair, and/or operation of such systems.
Serves as fire safety specialist and/or standpipe liaison: identifying college needs with regard to safety preparedness; assisting in the formulation of college personal safety programs such as emergency evacuation plans and fire safety plans; conducting staff safety training in internal operating procedures, use of fire extinguishers and other safety devices, etc.
Serves as locking specialist: assists in determining college needs for various types of physical plant security; researches and investigates new locking products, mechanisms, devices, and technologies; ascertains the capabilities of various locking systems in view of college needs for secure classrooms, storage vaults, laboratories, offices, learning centers, etc.; provides direction to the college lock shop, or equivalent.Serves as locking specialist: assists in determining college needs for various types of physical plant security; researches and investigates new locking products, mechanisms, devices, and technologies; ascertains the capabilities of various locking systems in view of college needs for secure classrooms, storage vaults, laboratories, offices, learning centers, etc.; provides direction to the college lock shop, or equivalent.

Serves as training and development specialist for security staff on campus: reviewing new areas or procedures, operations, and protocols; determining staff needs; identifying appropriate subject matter and training techniques; planning, scheduling and/or conducting programs; evaluating training effectiveness. Also serves as liaison to University-Sponsored training and development programs. Also monitors staff licenses and certifications to determine status and assure correctness and validity. Also conducts roll-call training.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The CUNY School of Medicine (SoM) located in the heart of Harlem, New York, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, the institution transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine in 2016. The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD degree (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master’s Degree (27 months program). True to its legacy of access, opportunity, and community transformation, the medical school’s mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as New York City itself. CUNY SoM places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine and on training high quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York’s medically under-served communities. As a major priority, CUNY SoM also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.
The SoM is currently seeking a College Security Specialist Level 1 to provide armed protection and implement various safety measures for the Dean while on or off the campus. The successful candidate will support the Dean by providing high-level executive protection, ensure overall public safety, and provide administrative duties as directed. This position provides physical coverage for the Dean while in New York City, the tri-state area, and provides transportation to and from the airport during domestic and international travel. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of armed protection, public safety, and executive protection.
This position is a Provisional title , continued employment is contingent upon taking the exam when it is offered by CUNY, passing the civil service examination and being reachable on the CUNY Eligibility List upon appointment,
Reporting to the Dean of the SoM, the College Security Specialist duties include but are not limited to the following responsibilities:
Provide executive protection for the Dean while on campus, during local area travel, on-site and local off-site events, and after business travel.
Protection services may be required for escorting dignitaries, public officials, industry executives and other individuals visiting the Dean’s Office; Must maintain a strong customer service mentality.
Lead trip planning logistics and coordinate with various internal and external teams, including Dean’s Office staff, Campus Public Safety, and University Public Safety when necessary.
Maintain relationships with New York City Police Department and other law enforcement officers, particularly in NYC, for effective event coverage and assistance.
Conduct advanced site visits to meticulously plan logistics in order to support the SoM at various corporate functions to ensure proper coordination of security staff and venue safety.
Provide comprehensive executive protection services, including trip planning, administrative work, driver services, close and armed protection, and event coverage.
Offer security support and guidance for meetings and events with executives to ensure adequate protection is provided.
Work independently and adapt to various environments while demonstrating high attentiveness, energy, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Level I
- Possession of a high school diploma, or equivalent and
(a) Two (2) years as a CUNY Campus Public Safety Sergeant or,
(b) Seven (7) years full-time experience in security, law enforcement, public safety, or a related field, or the
equivalent experience in a technical field utilizing similar skills, competencies and/or equipment.
- Possession of those special licenses, permits, or certificates as may be required by certification authorities
in the field of specialization, to be specified in the job posting.
Substitutions:
Possession of an associate degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited institution of higher education may substitute for two (2) years of required generic work experience.
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from and accredited institution of higher education may substitute four (4) years of the required generic work experience.

the functional specialization of either physical security or security training and development.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of 8 years in law enforcement, military, government or certified civilian security experience preferred and at least 3 years of experience providing protection practices.
Possess a valid driver’s license with a clear record.
Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm license and proficiency is required.
The ability to work night, weekends, and long shifts and stand for 8-10 hours at a fixed post.

Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic medical environment. Strong understanding of the culture of academic medicine and the ability to address faculty concerns.
Experience working with underrepresented, low income, vulnerable, and marginalized students from middle school to experience working in health-related or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and Medicine) fields or other health professional pipeline programs highly desirable.
Understanding of the importance of diversity in academic medicine and the impact of educational and health care disparities on medicine.
COMPENSATION
New Hire: $62,268*
Incumbent: $70,359
*This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment.
