Animal Technician III - Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an Animal Technician to join the Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists team in Elmont, NY. The Animal Tech will primarily work nights/weekends and should be extremely reliable, self-motivated, and have a team-based approach. You should be interested in working in an innovative and stimulating environment that will assist in providing excellent experience with equine animals in patient care and husbandry. Under the direct supervision of a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) or DVM, you will be responsible for assistance with patient care as well as clinic maintenance and overall cleaning.


The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Animal husbandry, including stall cleaning, feeding, grooming and other barn chores.
  • Assist clinicians and/or LVT's with afterhours admissions and discharges, as well as during emergency exams.
  • Monitor condition of all in-house patients in all wards (ICU and regular wards) during shift and report any irregularities or concerns to clinician or LVT
  • Setup and assist during and cleanup after all emergencies including any and all surgical cases.
  • Clean, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to hospital protocols.
  • Help keep all areas of the hospital stocked appropriately.
  • Assist clinician or LVT with handling emergency and critical inpatients as needed and support quality patient care.
  • Assist with jogging horses for lameness evaluations, as needed.

Employees working with animals must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.


Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Self-starter, detail oriented, well organized
  • Able to work quickly and efficiently while maintaining safety at all times.
  • Able to use sound judgement for setting priorities.
  • Must be extremely reliable and have a disciplined work ethic.
  • Able to develop and maintain professional working relationships and communicate with staff, veterinarians, clients and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
  • Must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but are not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting/positioning animals exceeding 50 pounds.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with horses.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Elmont, NY (Long Island).
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

CRES provides care for horses 24/7, 365 days per year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception and will include providing holiday coverage, as well as day, weekend, evening and overnight shifts as needed due to patient needs and hospital shortages. This position is considered essential and is therefore required to report to work as scheduled during emergency closings.
